Developmental Editing

Contact Martha

“I couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful, perceptive, careful, wise, professional, creative, and well-read editor.” — Jim English

Developmental editing focuses on the same “big picture” story-level issues as a written manuscript assessment (like character arc, pacing, plot and structure) — but goes into greater detail, chapter by chapter, scene by scene. Selected passages may also receive some line editing. Again, my goal is to help you feel confident and excited about revising your work. Developmental editing gives your work the close attention and detailed feedback that most writers crave.

  • You’ll receive a detailed editorial letter (5,000 to 7,000 words).
  • You’ll also receive the edited manuscript, with edits and suggestions marked in Word’s track changes.
  • We’ll follow up with a Zoom conversation, to discuss any questions you may have about my editing of your work — and to brainstorm more options for your revisions.
